Fenugreek Can Increase Growth Hormone Release!
Fenugreek is well known as an herb that promote increased testosterone levels which results in more muscle mass. We have exciting news: fenugreek will be included in supplements that increase growth hormone levels! Studies done at Yeungnam University by researchers from Korea discovered Fenugreek's GH effect when they screened a methanol-based fenugreek extract using cells from the pituitary gland of rats. The pituitary is a gland located in the brain that secretes testosterone-stimulating hormones LH and FSH as well as growth hormone. Pituitary activity increases if the hypothalamus – also a gland located in the brain – synthesizes more LHRH and GHRH.
The Koreans were interested in compounds that stimulate growth hormone production as a remedy for osteoporosis, age related muscle loss and general signs of aging. In 2003, 2004 and 2007 studies were published that demonstrated that GH production is increased by glycyrretic acid, glycyrrhizin in Glycyrrhizae radix, puerarin in Pueraria thunbergiana and 1-monopalmitin and1-monlionlein in Astragalus membranaceus.
The article referred to here was published in 2008 in Chemistry & Biodiversity. In this case, the complete methanol extract increased Growth Hormone production by nearly 2200 percent! This happened at an extremely high concentration: 1 mg per millilitre.
Researchers isolated and studied individual compounds discovering two active components: fenugreek saponin I (compound 1) and dioscin (compound 9). These two compounds increased GH release factors of 13 and 18, with the concentration of 20 micrograms per millilitre. Increasing manufacturer funded research is showing that fenugreek extracts have properties that are appealing to bodybuilders and other athletes, such as increased muscle size, strength and endurance, along with a greater sex drive and enhanced fat burning effects. Fenugreek has long been considered to be a natural testosterone booster, which it does but not to the extent that you can see measurable effects.
