Supplement Spotlight: ABL Pharma Phenibut

A bottle of ABL Pharma Phenibut

Nootropics have become one of the hottest supplement categories in the sports nutrition market. It comes as no surprise. After all, who doesn’t want better cognitive performance? Most supplement companies now make a nootropic formula. Additionally, the list of nootropic supplements is a long one. One of the more popular compounds is called Phenibut. In this edition of Supplement Spotlight, we’ll take an in-depth look at ABL Pharma Phenibut. Ready? Let’s get started!

What Is ABL Pharma Phenibut?

Before we detail ABL Pharma’s product, let’s find out what Phenibut is. First, it’s a derivative of GABA, the natural sleep aid. In fact, its technical name is beta-phenyl-gamma-aminobutyric acid. Developed in Russia back in the 60s, it’s widely used as an anti-anxiety product.

To be clear, Phenibut is a controversial ingredient. There are two reasons for this. Some criticize the lack of research on human test subjects. Others feel it can be easily abused. Ultimately, if you choose to use it, you should read and follow all directions on the label. Therefore, this is not one of those supplements you should double-dose.

ABL Pharma Phenibut provides 500mg per serving. For reference, one serving equals one capsule. The only other ingredients are what’s used to make the capsules.

What Does It Do?

Initially, when it was first discovered, Phenibut was used to combat sleep disorders and depression, and anxiety.

In fact, it has a history of use in Russia for these purposes. Also, some of the Russian studies using human test subjects used the same dose that ABL Pharma contains – 500mg. That means ABL Pharma is dosed within the effective range. (1, 2)

Other functions of Phenibut include cognitive enhancement, specifically, attention span, clarity, and motivation. However, it should be emphasized that this is to be taken at night before bed. As a result, attempts to use it during the day to enhance mental performance may lead to extreme drowsiness. (3)

Finally, and not surprisingly, Phenibut is still used to treat insomnia. It’s a popular sleep aid, and ABL Pharma markets it as a natural relief for insomnia. It should be noted that if you plan to try Phenibut to help you sleep, do not mix it with any other supplements you may be using now. Use Phenibut on its own so you can see how well it works for you.

Phenibut’s Mechanism Of Action

Phenibut metabolizes in the liver. It crosses the blood-brain barrier within 2–4 hours of ingestion. It has a half-life of about 5 hours, and its duration of action can extend from 15 to 24 hours. This depends on the amount ingested.

As noted, Phenibut is a derivative of GABA (or gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA is a primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. It blocks impulses between nerve cells in the brain. It’s a popular supplement, yet it can’t cross the blood-brain barrier.

Phenibut adds a phenyl group to the GABA molecule. This allows it to cross the blood-brain barrier. From there, it binds to GABA receptors in the brain. As a result, this calms neural activity, reduces anxiety, and promotes a feeling of relaxation.

In addition, Phenibut stimulates the brain’s dopamine receptors. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that stimulates motivation, pleasure, and reward. In fact, this action may be at least partially responsible for the mood elevation, reduced social anxiety, and euphoric feelings reported by Phenibut users. (4, 5, 6)

How Do I Use ABL Pharma Phenibut?

Since this is mainly a sleep aid, take one capsule 30-60 minutes before going to bed. An important point is that you should only use Phenibut for 3 days, followed by 3-4 days off.

What Can I Stack It With?

ABL Pharma Phenibut is best used as part of an overall stack.

For example, here’s a basic muscle-building stack that adds ABL Pharma Phenibut.

Or a nootropic stack that adds muscle-building products.

Finally, you can replace muscle builders with fat loss products if that’s your goal.
