Test Drive: PEScience Select Protein

PEScience Select Protein 2lbs

In this installment of Test Drive, I’m reviewing my experience with PEScience Select Protein. This is a product I have used on many occasions. It’s not simply another whey protein powder, but a multi-protein source with varying digestion speeds. That’s an important benefit!  In this article, I’ll cover the formula, its benefits, and how I used it. I’ll also touch on the importance of protein. Let’s jump right in!

What Is PEScience Select Protein?

PEScience Select Protein is a superior protein powder that features milk isolate, whey concentrate proteins, and leucine peptides. Milk isolate is a combination of casein and whey. All of this means that Select Protein provides fast digesting whey and slow digesting casein for an extended anabolic effect.

How I Used PEScience Select Protein

I see protein powder as an indispensable supplement. This was especially true when I worked (I’m retired). I drink a small protein shake as soon as I wake up, usually about a 4 oz protein shake. If you’re a coffee drinker like me, have your first cup about 15 minutes later. By having protein right away, I can get my body in an anabolic environment quickly. I also drink a shake right after I work out. On off-days, when I worked, I would have a shake before work, and another one during the day. Currently, I have my morning shake, then a shake mid-morning (off days only) or post-workout.

The Importance Of Protein

Of the 3 macro nutrients (protein, carbs, and fat), protein is not the same as the other two. It’s true that each macro nutrient contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. However, protein also contains nitrogen atoms. Nitrogen is a major component of protein. Another major component is amino acids. Interestingly, the name “amino” means nitrogen-containing.

Protein Balance

You might have heard the term “positive nitrogen balance”. You’ve also most likely heard the term “positive protein balance”. Basically, these terms both mean that the body is in an anabolic state due to having enough protein to meet the fundamental needs of the body and to support muscle growth.

Amino Acids

There are a total of  20 proteinogenic amino acids, these are the ones that create protein.

It’s important to understand that protein does not just provide a single function. Instead, there are unending chains or sequences of amino acids. Each chain performs a specific function. What this means is that protein performs literally hundreds of functions in the body, every single day. It also means that you need to ingest enough protein to cover these daily obligations as well as support muscle growth. (1)

Timing

Although it is currently somewhat controversial, many nutrition experts  suggest eating protein (or drinking a protein shake) every 3-4 hours. This allows the body to maintain a positive protein balance. That’s because, as noted, eating frequent protein meals keeps you in an anabolic state. If you’re in a negative nitrogen balance, from not ingesting enough protein, your body is in a destructive catabolic state. This is why consuming sufficient protein from food sources and protein powders like Select throughout the day is important. If  you’re lacking protein, the body can and will break down your hard-earned muscle to help meet its daily protein obligations. That’s to be avoided at all costs!

Do I Really Need To Eat Frequent Meals?

What about the idea of eating every 3-4 hours? For me, maintaining a consistent and frequent intake of protein is huge. It’s not currently “fashionable” but it really comes down to common sense. Rather than waiting hours to consume a high protein meal or shake, if you’re hungry, eat (or drink a shake). There’s no reason or harm in consuming your meal/shakes every 3-4 hours if that works for you. Of course, if you feel you can wait hours after a workout to eat, and not be hungry in the meantime, then by all means go for it.

Do I Recommend PEScience Select Protein?

As noted, I see protein powder as a foundational supplement. With that in mind, based on the protein profile, ease of mixing and the delicious taste, I highly recommend PEScience Select Protein.
