Test Drive: EFX Sports Kre-Alkalyn
In this installment of Test Drive, we’ll look at one of the products that put EFX Sports on the map: Kre-Alkalyn. This is a product that is used over time, so one use does not qualify as a review. That means I am using it for 3-4 weeks to see what the effects are. Is it really better than standard creatine monohydrate? Let’s find out!
A Quick Look At Creatine Monohydrate
It’s no secret that creatine monohydrate is the most tested and proven effective supplement on the market. Since its introduction way back in the early 90s, a lot of companies have been trying to ride creatine’s coat-tails. That’s because it changed the supplement industry and has become one of the most popular supplements ever released. Most companies have attempted to come up with a superior form of creatine, or perhaps a superior form of monohydrate. In virtually every case, it’s been about absorption.
What Is EFX Sports Kre-Alkalyn?
So where does Kre-Alkalyn fit in? This ingredient is creatine monohydrate with the unique twist of being pH-balanced. Kre-Alkalyn claims that this allows it to be more stable. This helps users avoid the potential side effects of regular creatine monohydrate. It also claims that no loading is required. Finally, they claim a much smaller dose is all that’s necessary. For comparison, the standard dose of regular creatine monohydrate is 5 grams. With Kre-Alkalyn, it is taken according to weight and ranges from 1500 mg to 3 grams.
What Are The Ingredients?
There’s just one ingredient:
Kre-Alkalyn® (buffered creatine monohydrate) – 1500 mg per one heaping scoop.
It should be noted that EFX Sports makes all their own products. That means that their parent company, All American Pharmaceutical, makes the products. They have patents for Kre-Alkalyn here in the US as well as in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. (1)
What Are The Benefits?
EFX Sports claims the following benefits from using Kre-Alkalyn.
- Strength Gains
- Build Muscle mass
- Enhanced Performance
Of course, creatine has benefits beyond what’s listed above:
- Stimulates Cell Volume (Water-Based Pumps)
- Increased Endurance (ATP Production)
- Supports Recovery
EFX touches on all of these additional benefits except cell volume. Yet creatine is well-known as the original cell volumizer. It plays a big role in promoting water-based pumps.
How I Use EFX Sports Kre-Alkalyn
I am using the delicious powder, but you can take capsules. On training days, I mix a serving (1500 mg) of Kre-Alkalyn with my pre-workout. On off days, I take a scoop about 20 minutes after breakfast. I’m also using a protein powder. Plus, I feel this product might stack well with a glycerol supplement, such as Raw Nutrition Pump2.
An Example Workout
I’m currently following a 3-day Legs/Push/Pull split. I do two workouts at the gym and one workout in my home gym. I typically do 3 sets of an exercise and rarely more than a single exercise per bodypart. All working sets are taken to momentary failure, and I often use drop sets or rest pause, depending on the machine I am using. At home, I use free weights and rest-pause. I also use progressive overload and attempt to consistently add weight. But, I’m an older guy and sometimes experience little nagging injuries if I push too hard, so progression is not consistent.
With all that in mind, here’s an example leg workout I did this week. It should be noted that I prefer squats done in my home gym. But, I did legs at the gym due to an elbow injury that was still healing. I go a little easy on my legs because of arthritis in both knees and a foot.
Angled Leg Press
2 warmup sets x 15 reps
2 working sets x 8, 6 reps
Calf Press
1 working set x 18 reps
Seated Leg Curl
2 working sets x 10, 8 reps
Ab Machine
2 working sets x 12, 10 reps
⅛ Mile Walking Track
1 Lap
My Results So Far
When I take creatine, I look for a little more weight on the bar, better pumps, and ultimately size gains. I don’t see a lot of endurance from creatine. I see the most dramatic endurance increases from glycerol (6 grams and up). I’ve also been impressed with the endurance gains from Karbolyn. To be fair, I’ll need a few more weeks on Kre-Alkalyn to see any meaningful size gains.
Do I Recommend EFX Sports Kre-Alkalyn
I do recommend EFX Sports Kre-Alkalyn. In fact, I recommend EFX Sports in general. They’re making some very good products, and their website provides a lot of useful information.
