What Is Whey Protein?
Let’s take a second and review exactly what whey protein is. Whey protein is a milk by-product that is part of the process of milk being made into cheese. If you take a close look at whey, you will see that it contains proteins, peptides (protein segments), lactose (milk sugar), fat, salt, and water.
Whey Isolate has most of the fat, salt and lactose removed to create an extremely high quality protein. Coming up we’ll look more closely at whey protein quality.
How Is Rule 1 Clear Whey Protein Made?
Rule 1 Clear Isolate is one of the newer clear whey protein powders. So how is clear protein made? By taking whey protein isolate and filtering out remaining fats and lactose. In addition, the acidity (pH) is adjusted so the protein dissolves completely into a transparent, juice-like liquid instead of a milk-like shake.
The Manufacturing Process
- Whey Extraction – The liquid whey is separated from milk during the standard cheese-making process.
- Deep Microfiltration – The liquid passes through filters to strip away fats, sugars, and carbohydrates, creating a pure whey protein isolate.
- pH Balance – Manufacturers adjust the pH balance of the mixture (usually dropping it well below 3.5). This gives the protein molecules a positive electrical charge so they repel each other and refuse to clump or scatter light, resulting in a clear drink.
- Drying and Flavoring – The liquid is dried into a fine powder and mixed with fruit flavorings and sweeteners.
Whey Protein Quality
Regardless of the recent popularity of plant proteins, whey protein is still the highest quality protein you can buy. First of all, it is a rich source of BCAAs (Branched Chain Amino Acids). In fact, whey protein contains the highest BCAA levels of any natural food source. For example, there are 26g of BCAAs per 100g of whey. Furthermore, whey is a fast-digesting protein, which makes it ideal for morning and post-workout use.
There are several methods that are used to determine the quality of a protein. Biological value, or BV, is one common method. What is it? BV is the measure of the efficiency of a protein, meaning how it’s absorbed and how it’s used by the body.
For decades, egg protein has been the standard with a BV of 100. That changed when whey protein hit the market in the 1990s. The BV of whey protein can be as high as 170, depending on the type of whey. When whey protein was first introduced, this was a key selling point that was used to help overcome the dominance of 100% egg white protein and to help establish whey as the new protein King.
The Three Types Of Whey Protein
There are three types of whey protein, let’s take a look at each one. (1)
- Isolate – This is the purest form of whey protein. As noted, this has the least amount of lactose and fat and it consists of at least 90% protein.
- Hydrolysate – This is whey isolate broken down into smaller particles for faster digestion and better absorption. It’s not quite as popular as whey concentrate and isolate due to a slightly bitter taste.
- Concentrate – This is not as pure as whey isolate because it has more fat and lactose. Whey Protein Concentrate consists of 70-80% protein, the rest is lactose and fat.
How To Use It
As per the label directions, mix one scoop of Rule 1 Clear Isolate with approx. 12-16 oz. of ice-cold water in a shaker cup. Allow a few seconds for foam to dissipate. Use before or after workouts, or anytime to refresh and add high-quality protein to your daily routine.
In the introduction, I mentioned new possibilities with this protein. Two of them are the idea of drinking Rule 1 Clear Isolate while you workout, like an intra-workout. You could also drink this when you’re doing your cardio. Talk about staying in positive protein balance! The second one is simply the fruity flavors Rule 1 Clear Protein brings to the table!
